The culmination of the first CS:GO Major series tournament in 2022, taking place in Antwerp, Belgium is near. The top eight teams will compete over three days starting from May 19 for the main prize of the PGL Major Antwerp 2022 - $500,000 and a ticket to the BLAST Premier World Final 2022. The quarterfinals of the playoff round took place on Friday, May 20. The semifinals and the grand final will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

Group stage roster and results

24 of the world's strongest teams opened the season on May 9 at the Antwerp Sport Palace Arena. Each of them went through a tough selection in the regional qualifications on their way to the final stage of the tournament. The 4 qualifying competitions (Europe A, Europe B, America, Asia-Oceania) took place in April 2022 at the headquarters of the organizer, the Romanian company PGL Esports in Bucharest. The co-organizer of the tournament is Valve Software. The total prize pool of the first CS:GO Major was $1,000,000.

According to the results of the qualification, eight teams with the status of "Legends" were determined. As a privilege for the best results in the qualifying rounds, they skipped the New Challengers stage and went straight to the final group. The eight "seeded" teams were:

- Heroic (DEN);

- BIG (GER);

- FaZe Clan (USA);

- Natus Vincere (UKR);

- Cloud9 (RUS);

- Copenhagen Flames (DEN);

- Ninjas in Pyjamas (SWE);

- FURIA Esports (BRA).

The remaining 16 teams over three days (May 9-12) competed for eight tickets to the next stage. As a result of this stage to the strongest teams were added:

- Team Spirit (RUS);

- ENCE (EU);

- Team Liquid (USA);

- Bad News Eagles (KOS);

- Outsiders (CIS);

- Team Vitality (FRA);

- Imperial Esports (BRA);

- G2 Esports (EU).

The final group meetings (the Top 16 teams of the 2022 CS:GO First Major) began on May 14 and lasted for four days. They brought many unexpected results and determined the final eight playoff participants and contenders for the top prize.

Tournament progress and ΒΌ finals pairings

The least problems on their way to the playoffs had teams from the post-Soviet area Team Spirit (RUS) and Natus Vincere (UKR), as they synchronously defeated their rivals with a 3-0 score. Now they can fight each other only in the final, provided they reach it. The schedule for the Russians and Ukrainians is as tough as could be expected for a tournament of this level.

"The Dragons" defeated FURIA and Heroic in the first two rounds with the same score of 16 - 12. These intermediate results of the 2022 Major were perceived as a sensation by spectators and commentators. In the third round, the Russians defeated another Danish player Copenhagen Flames in a best-of-3 format with 2 - 1 and advanced to the Champions Stage ahead of schedule. Interestingly, all three Team Spirit rivals also made it to the playoffs.

The team from Ukraine got off to a rough start (19-17 in the first game against G2 Esports), then earned a convincing victory over BIG (16-8) and ended up stronger than the Swedish NIP in the Promotion Round with a 2-1 score.

The quarterfinals rivals for Team Spirit were the already familiar Brazilians from FURIA. The shadow favorites from Ukraine in the playoffs can expect a seemingly simple meeting with the Danes from Heroic.

The international ENCE team unexpectedly lost in the second round to the unstable Danes Copenhagen Flames (8 - 16), while before that game they simply crushed one of the favorites FaZe Clan (16 - 8). The road to the playoffs in the end dragged on for two games (solid victories over the Outsiders and Heroic). In the quarterfinals, ENCE had a great chance for revenge in the game with the offenders from Copenhagen.

In the last quarterfinal, FaZe Clan and Ninjas in Pyjamas crossed paths. The bookmakers rated the first team as the favorite before the start of the tournament.

Playoff games

This status Finn Andersen's team successfully confirmed on May 19, when they defeated the Swedes from NIP with a score of 2 - 1. FaZe turned out to be stronger on Nuke (16-10) and Inferno (16-8) and lost to their opponent on Overpass (13-16).

The Russian Team Spirit surpassed the Brazilians from FURIA for the second time in the tournament, winning both maps: Vertigo (16-12) and Ancient (16-8). Now a tough encounter with the superior forces of Faze Clan awaits them in the semifinals.

In the third quarterfinal on May 20 the ENCE team confidently defeated the Danes from Copenhagen Flames. Marko Pfeiffer's hot Finnish team overcame the opposition on both Vertigo (16 - 10) and Nuke (16 - 12).

In the final match of the Champions Stage NaVi knocked another Danish team Heroic out of the playoffs. The Ukrainians won 2 maps (Ancient 16 - 14 and Nuke 16 - 8) and gave up one (Inferno 10 - 16).

These are the intermediate results of the 2022 Major in Antwerp. There are 3 most tense matches left to determine the winner. In the first semi-final on May 21 Team Spirit and FaZe Clan will meet, in the second - ENCE and NaVi.
